The Pitcairn Islands on Indipex International Stamp Exhibition Delhi

To commemorate the attendance of the Pitcairn Islands Philatelic Bureau at the International Stamp Exhibition in Delhi in February (Indipex 2011), a miniature sheet has been produced featuring important images from both locations. India is represented by the national flower Lotus Nelumbo nucipera gaertn and the internationally known Taj Mahal, while Pitcairn is represented by the endangered Yellow fautu Abutilon pitcairnense. Both flowers have been brought together in this colourful miniature sheet.

Abutilon pitcairnense or Endangered Yellow fautu  remains listed as a critically endangered species (IUCN 2000). The plant itself is described as a sprawling shrub, approximately 1M tall with alternate leaves 13 x 9cm.The flowers are somewhat bell shaped and appear to be nodding. They are yellow with 3cm long petals. The plant is found in scrub on often unstable slopes, and flowers in July / August.

Malta - Iceland Joint Issue 2011 "Fishing Villages"

Iceland and Malta are the northernmost and southernmost islands in Europe.  Fishing has been the main source of revenue for centuries on these two islands.
Iceland Post and Malta Post has been collaborating on a joint stamp issue occasioned by this relationship with fishing towns as the motif, featuring 'Fishing Villages' .  This set was issued on 15 September 2011.

 

The town of Húsavík is the motif of the Icelandic mini-sheet while the Maltese one depicts the town of Mgarr, Gozo. 

The Republic of Malta is a small and densely populated country on an island by the same name and some smaller islands in the Mediterranean. The islands are located between Italy in the north and the north-coast of Africa. The official languages are English and Maltese. Malta joined the European Union in 2004 and is now the smallest EU country both as regards size and population. Only three of the biggest islands are populated: Malta, Gozo and Comino.

Joint Issue Italy - San Marino. 150th Anniversary of the bestowal of honorary citizenship on Giuseppe Garibaldi by San Marino

On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy, this joint issue between San Marino and Italy commemorates the figure of Giuseppe Garibaldi.
Fleeing from the Austrians following the events of 1849, the “Hero of the two Worlds” sought refuge in San Marino with his companion Anita and his troops. At that time, the Republic of San Marino was participating actively in the Risorgimento movement: it offered shelter to illustrious Italian exiles, while numerous Sammarinese volunteers took part in insurrectionary movements and the wars for Italian independence.

Garibaldi always felt love and gratitude for San Marino and, in acknowledgement of the honorary citizenship bestowed on him on the 24th of April 1861, was to write, “I am proud to be a citizen of such a virtuous republic,” and “I thank you for the present which will always remind me of the generous hospitality of San Marino in a moment of extreme danger for me and for Italy.”

The souvenir sheet features in the centre a stamp with a value of €1,50. In the foreground the figures of Anita and Giuseppe Garibaldi with the First Tower in the background.The sheet issued on June 4, 2011 and designed by C. Bruscaglia.

Species at Risk - Australian Joint Territories

The concept of the joint issue Species at Risk – Australian Joint Territories (Australia, Christmas Island, Cocos Keelling Islands, Australia Antarctic Territory )was an initiative of Australia Post and designed by Kevin Stead, from South Australia.

Norfolk Island’s contribution to this issue is the Green Parrot. A plan to save this beautiful parrot from extinction began about fifteen years ago and its numbers are steadily increasing.
The stamps has issued on August 4, 2009, and comprised of 5 single stamps with uniform of face value, 55c.
